The technicians at MobilityWorks@home are experts in installing, servicing, and repairing wheelchair ramps to keep you on the move. While we configure our ramps to blend in with your home’s look and layout, our top priority is providing you with a safe way to access your residence.
Here are some of the characteristics our technicians look for to ensure you can use your ramp safely:
1. Degree of Incline
Perhaps the most important safety factor of your ramp, it is essential that the incline is an appropriate slope for your home’s layout and your mobility capabilities. A ramp that is too steep poses a risk for the wheelchair user, as it can be difficult to travel upward and could result in slipping backward.
2. Level Landings
The transition on and off your ramp should be as smooth as possible. Ideally, the landing area should level off with the top or bottom of the ramp to prevent tipping the wheelchair or creating a sudden drop-off. Landings could be as simple as a current surface, like a sidewalk, or may need to be constructed as part of the ramp.
3. Surface Material
Wet or snowy weather conditions can impact the traction of your wheelchair ramp throughout the year and create a slide risk for the wheelchair user. Alternatively, high temperatures can make your ramp hot to the touch depending on what material your ramp is made from. Ramps sold through MobilityWorks@home contain a built-in anti-slip surface and are weather-resistant, ensuring a comfortable surface regardless of weather conditions.
4. Handrails
Handrails provide wheelchair users with a way to pull themselves up out of their chair if necessary or pull themselves along the ramp if they become tired. This component should be installed at a height that is comfortable for you and should be strong enough to support you should you need to lean on them. Pre-assembled handrails are included when you purchase a wheelchair ramp through MobilityWorks@home.
5. Weight Limits
Not all ramps are created equal when it comes to weight capacities, so be sure that the material of your ramp can support both your weight and the weight of your wheelchair or power scooter. Heavy accessories such as oxygen tanks should also be factored in. Our modular ramps are durable enough to support up to 1,000 pounds.
